Strategy

The Rhine is a vital source of drinking water for millions of people. RIWA-Rijn is therefore actively committed to clean and reliable river water, now and in the future. RIWA-Rijn's strategy centers on three pillars: knowledge gathering and sharing, information provision, and advocacy. These pillars form the basis for a broad commitment to monitoring, research, collaboration, and policy advocacy – both nationally and internationally.

Our strategy: Three pillars for clean river water

RIWA-Rijn works to ensure clean river water by focusing on three strategic pillars:

1. Gathering and sharing knowledge

  • Monitoring water quality: We manage a monitoring network to detect changes in water quality and assess them against ERM (European Water Memorandum) target values.
  • Conducting research: We study substances relevant to our members, including their properties, presence, and toxicity. We also examine the effects of climate change and changes in water management.
  • Collaboration: We align our monitoring and research activities with organizations such as KWR, RIVM, and Rijkswaterstaat. Through IAWR, we coordinate with German partners as well.

2. Informing

  • Advising: Representing the interests of drinking water companies, we share our knowledge about rivers, substances, and discharges with Rijkswaterstaat and committees such as the International Commission for the Protection of the Rhine (ICPR), .
  • Supporting: Our members rely on our information and expertise.
  • Raising awareness: We inform industries and agricultural organizations about the negative impact of emissions on water quality.
  • Knowledge sharing: We provide research results and water quality data to universities, research institutes, and government bodies.

3. Advocacy

  • Government dialogue: We regularly consult with ministries such as Infrastructure and Water Management and Economic Affairs, together with RIWA-Maas and Vewin.
  • Cooperation with Rijkswaterstaat: We engage with Rijkswaterstaat and regional directorates in the Dutch Rhine catchment area.
  • International involvement: As an NGO, IAWR has access to the working groups of the International Commission for the Protection of the Rhine (ICPR). RIWA-Rijn represents IAWR in these working groups and maintains good contacts with the delegations within the ICPR.

Through these pillars, we are committed to clean and safe drinking water for all.
